Taxonomic collections, data, technologies and experts hold an extraordinary wealth of information about the diversity of life. TETTRIX will bring these strengths closer together and will develop, validate and scale innovative tools, services, infrastructures and learning pathways, making taxonomic knowledge easier to discover, access, connect and apply across borders and disciplines.

Ultimately, TETTRIX aims to unlock the full potential of taxonomy for Europe by strengthening the knowledge base needed to understand and monitor biodiversity, inform policy, support research and accelerate innovation for a sustainable future.

Taxonomy provides the foundation for knowing life on Earth through the identification of species, understanding their relationships and documenting the diversity of organisms and ecosystems. This knowledge underpins effective biodiversity conservation, sustainable use and evidence-based decision-making, and is essential to delivering the ambitions of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, the European Green Deal and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

TETTRIX connects fragmented resources into a discoverable, interoperable and actionable integrative taxonomic ecosystem to help transforming scientific knowledge into the evidence needed for research, policy and effective action for nature.

Integrate

Powerful tools and services for taxonomy by connecting taxonomic data, knowledge and workflows through interoperable solutions such as TaxoTrack, the Digital Taxonomic Backbone, GHOST for dark taxa, and the Species AI Lab (SAIL), integrating new technologies and innovations, genomics and observations, and accelerating species discovery, making taxonomic resources easier to access and use.

A Unique European taxonomic hub, the Marketplace, as a dynamic, FAIR-aligned gateway connecting experts, datasets, tools and services across Europe, matching needs with expertise and enabling taxonomy to support research and real-world applications.

It builds on pilot methods for automated tracking of taxonomic activities to deliver a fully functional, continuously updated foresight and intelligence system integrated with a policy dashboard.
Interoperable service platform connecting taxonomy tools, training resources, and data services.
Digital Taxonomic Backbone: the next-generation framework uniting modernised nomenclatural databases and the GHOST system for dark taxa.
Species identification AI-model piloted via SAIL and connected with DiSSCo and other RIs.

Transform

A strong science-policy interface by connecting taxonomic knowledge with decision-making through the Cluster for Taxonomy, the European Knowledge Network KEN-Taxonomy, evidence reports and policy-oriented knowledge, supporting more effective, evidence-based action for biodiversity.

Outputs

Code of Conduct & GEI framework ensuring ethical, inclusive, and socio-economically recognised taxonomy practices.
High-level knowledge exchange platform engaging national agencies, EU services and observations and restoration practitioners.
EU-wide collaborative forum to align taxonomy-related EU projects and amplify impact.

Upskill

To secure the taxonomic capacity needed for effective biodiversity conservation, we will equip current and future taxonomists with advanced training, digital skills, recognised qualifications, and new career pathways. In doing so, we will strengthen the taxonomic workforce and its capacity to work across disciplines and connected fields of expertise, supporting a broader range of biodiversity challenges and future needs.

Outputs

An advanced comprehensive learning and professional development platform, the TETTRIX Academy, combining training, resources, assessment and certification to strengthen taxonomic capacity and equip the next generation of taxonomists.
A bridge between taxonomy, business and society, creating new opportunities to apply taxonomic knowledge in sustainability, risk management and decision-making, supported by initiatives such as the Taxonomy Ambassadors Programme, Taxonomists in Residence and Taxonomists4Future.
A lasting legacy for European taxonomy through translating TETTRIX achievements into recommendations, guidelines, policy briefs, impact assessments and strategic roadmaps, while amplifying their reach through communication, the Taxonomy Recognition Day, and a strong focus on gender equality, inclusion and socio-economic impact.
The Taxonomists4Future programme will pioneer Taxonomist-in-Residence placements in policy and industry, opening new career pathways. Courses will combine online and face-to-face delivery with repositories, assessments, and guidance.

Demonstrate

Through cascade funding, we will test and validate innovative tools, workflows, and training approaches across priority areas such as dark taxa, climate-indicator taxa, invasive species, and underrepresented taxa and regions, generating evidence and practical solutions that can be adopted and scaled across Europe.

Outputs

Satellite projects are third-party projects funded by TETTRIX to strengthen taxonomic capacity across Europe. They focus on testing new tools and methods, addressing underrepresented taxa and ecosystems, and expanding training and participation. Through two calls, they aim to improve taxonomic expertise, support priority areas, and contribute results to TETTRIX’s Marketplace and training infrastructure.
Validated tools, workflows, and training courses are systematically embedded in Marketplace and Academy and exploited and endorsed through the taxonomic community around CETAF and other relevant sister communities (ERGA, iBOL, ECSA).

Satellite
projects

They are an innovation and validation mechanism feeding the permanent TETTRIX ecosystem, with a €2.4M cascade-funding programme, helping validate innovations, address knowledge gaps and strengthen European taxonomic capacity.

TETTRIX will extend its reach beyond the consortium through near 40 satellite initiatives contributing to expand, enlarge, and improve taxonomic capacity across regions, taxa and fields of expertise.

Upgrade of taxonomic capacity

Testing and validating taxonomic tools, services, workflows and methods in real-world contexts, addressing priority challenges including dark taxa, climate-indicator species, freshwater and marine biodiversity, invasive alien species and citizen science.

Call 02

Enlargement of taxonomic capacity

Supporting training courses and learning pathways that expand taxonomic capacity across Europe. The results will feed back into the wider TETTRIX ecosystem, helping validate innovations, address knowledge gaps and strengthen European taxonomic capacity.
